Duck Donuts -- famous on the Outer Banks of North Carolina where they got their start -- has announced they will open in New Haven County in Orange.
With 145 shops nationwide and in several other countries, the concept and all the hype behind their success is each donut is made to order and you get to pick the toppings.
Connecticut's first will be located at 350 Boston Post Road, said Cassidy Funk, a spokesperson for the company.
Funk said the shop, owned by locals Chris Cassese & Robert ElHage, is in the early stages of the permitting process, so it will be a while before it opens.
The concept behind Duck Donuts is they serve made-to-order donuts in a family-friendly environment where the customers get to create their own from a variety of coatings, toppings, and drizzles to create an endless array of options, or “duckzillion” combinations, Funk said.
One Yelper put it this way:
"I ordered 12 donuts and I heard "It will be a few minutes as we are going to make them" I said "Wait, what? Make them like now?" And they did confirm that they make them fresh to order and on the spot. Nothing frozen to order. I tasted a cinnamon sugar donut when it was just made. OH. MY. GOSH. A great donut place and a great way to support a small business."
This is how it works:
- Start with a fresh vanilla cake donut
- Pick your glaze including maple, lemon, chocolate, blueberry, vanilla, strawberry, peanut butter, powdered or cinnamon sugar, or leave bare
- Top with rainbow or chocolate sprinkles, chopped peanuts or bacon, shredded coconut, Oreo cookie pieces, graham cracker crumbs, streusel
- Drizzle with hot fudge, raspberry, salted caramel, and marshmallow.
Duck Donuts also serves its signature coffee blend as well as espresso beverages, breakfast sandwiches, donut sundaes, milkshakes, and frozen beverages.
